Description
A photograph album once belonging to "Margaret Stokes of Carrig Breac, Howth, County Dublin (Ireland)" that includes pasted photographs illustrating accompanying cuttings of articles [by Stokes] that appeared in the "Daily Express" Newspaper about the National Gallery of London, its collections, and Sir Frederic William Burton. Annotations in both pencil and ink pen are made beside some of the illustrations and articles. Referenced works and artists include early Greek and Roman portraits, works of the Tuscan School including pieces by Botticelli, Dominico del Ghirlandaio, Andrea del Sarto, and Michelangelo, the Milanese School including a work by Borgonone, the Umbrian School including works by Raphael, the Venetian School including works by Giovanni Bellini and Paolo Veronese, the Flemish School including a work by Jan van Eyck, and works by Mantegna and Lorenzo Lotto. Also included in the scrapbook is a sheet of paper with the letterhead of the Athenaeum Club, Pall Mall (London, UK) with manuscript notes in ink "on human criminality" taken from Ernst Haeckel's "History of Creation" (1868).
