Secondary material relating to the life and work of Sir Frederic William Burton
Description
This series contains secondary material (not written or kept by Burton or compiled posthumously) regarding Burton's life and work. Most material pertains to Burton's career as an artist and his directorship of the National Gallery (UK), as well as the impact of his work on his native country of Ireland. Items include a photograph album compiled by the Irish archaeologist and antiquary Margaret McNair Stokes (also a personal friend of Burton) containing photographs of works in the National Gallery (UK) and newspaper cuttings, Stokes' notes for a biography of "the late Sir Frederic William Burton," a notebook relating to the content of Burton's sketchbooks, and an inventory of Burton's notebooks with extracts also by Stokes. Also included are copies of two editions of "The Leader" magazine which contain posthumous articles written on Burton by Lady Augusta Gregory and Henry Bindon Burton, Sir Frederic's nephew and executor. Also included are copies of posthumous articles written about Burton in "The Magazine of Art" (published by Cassell and Company), lists of Burton's works and where they were exhibited, and a "genealogy and memoir" of Buton's life.
