Description
This sub-series contains letters sent and received directly by Sir Frederic William Burton, relating primarily to his career as an artist as well as his later Directorship of the National Gallery (UK) from 1874-1894. Notable correspondents include Sir Charles Lock Eastlake and Sir William Boxall, both former Directors of the National Gallery (UK), antiquarians George Petrie and Samuel Ferguson, Egyptologist Amelia Blanford Edwards, letters attributed to the artist John Ruskin, art historians Charles Fairfax Murray and Dr. Jean Paul Richter, and renown Shakespearean actress Lady Helena Faucit Martin (a close personal friend of Sir Frederic), among others. Also included is a treasury warrant reinstating Sir Frederic as Director of the National Gallery for a further term of five years (1889).
