Correspondence
Description
This series contains general correspondence, which has been organized into three sub-series chronologically (and thus by relevance). The first of these sub-series contains correspondence relating directly to Sir Frederic and his career as an artist as well as his later Directorship of the National Gallery (UK) and includes letters from former National Gallery Directors and prominent scholars, artists, and antiquarians of the time as well as personal friends. The second sub-series contains correspondence related to the nephew of Sir Frederic, Henry Bindon Burton. This correspondence is from the period directly after the death of Sir Frederic in 1900 while Henry Burton was acting as executor of Sir Frederic's will, and includes correspondence with Sir Walter Armstrong (third Director of the National Gallery of Ireland) regarding a bequest from Sir Frederic. The third and final sub-series contains correspondence related to the largely genealogical enquiries of Robert W.G. Burton, a grand-nephew of Sir Frederic. Also included are letters from Robert Burton to John (Seán) Keating, then president of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), offering artwork and archival material of Sir Frederic.
