Description
Handwritten letter on headed paper, addressed from the Grand Hotel de Roma, Madrid in which Orpen writes of café visits with Lane, his plan to attend an upcoming bull fight 'where there will be eight bulls and sixteen horses killed for certain', and a gift of two unidentified terracotta items bought by Lane. He also writes that 'I feel I am learning so much from Velázquez and Goya that I am nearly off my head with excitement...' Letter includes three pen sketches - one of the artist walking in the driving rain, one of the artist and Hugh Lane visiting a café where Lane is tickled by a dancer, and a third sketch depicting Orpen watching a bull fight.
