Letters from William Orpen to Grace Orpen whilst he is working and travelling abroad in Europe
Description
Correspondence primarily concerns William Orpen's time travelling in Paris, France and Madrid, Spain, with the art collector Hugh Lane in 1904. These illustrated letters describe Orpen's impressions of the cities, and record the people he and Lane meet, the cultural venues they visit including the Louvre and the Prado Museums, and his thoughts on the artists' works he encounters there including those by Francisco Goya and Diego Velazquez in particular. Three later letters date from Orpen's visit to Paris in the 1920s and concern family life in his absence, notably his daughter 'Kit's' schooling.
