Description
This series contains general correspondence found in this collection, and is organized into four sub-series based on relevance to the artist. The first and second sub-series represent correspondence and invitations sent directly to Sir Frederic William Burton, and relate to his life and career as an artist and Director of the National Gallery (UK). Notable correspondents include George Petrie, Sir Frederick Leighton, and John Ruskin. Invitations include such events as the Trinity College Dublin Tercentenary Banquet held in 1892. The third sub-series represents an exhibition catalogue from and correspondence related to the 1900 Memorial Exhibition of the works of Sir Frederic William Burton at the National Gallery of Ireland. Correspondents include Henry Bindon Burton (Nephew of Sir Frederic and executor to his will), Margaret Stokes, Walter Strickland, Sir Walter Armstrong (third Director of the National Gallery of Ireland), and Lionel Cust (Director of the National Portrait Gallery (UK)). The fourth and final sub-series represents correspondence related to the donation, loan, sale, valuation, and authentication of works or archival material of Sir Frederic William Burton by the National Gallery of Ireland.
