Description
This collection contains material relating to Sir Frederic William Burton's life and career as an artist as well as his directorship of the National Gallery (London, UK). It includes correspondence between Burton and future National Gallery (London, UK) directors, prominent scholars, politicians, artists, and antiquarians of the time as well as personal friends, and correspondence related to the 1900 Memorial Exhibition of Burton's works at the National Gallery of Ireland. Also included is correspondence relating to the loan, donation, sale, valuation, and authentication of works by Burton by the National Gallery of Ireland to members of the public, including Robert W.G. Burton, grandnephew of Sir Frederic. Also found in this collection are pages from a scrapbook kept by Sir Frederic including [watercolour] sketches, as well as pen sketches, print reproductions of etchings, and photographs of watercolours by Burton. Other materials include ephemera such as Burton's [cuff links], visiting cards, and an example signature, and miscellaneous poems and prints. A final component of this collection comprises secondary scholarly biographical material written on Burton's life and work including photocopies from many print journals and publications, and publications directly issued by the National Gallery of Ireland.
