Sir Frederic William Burton's "Almanack and Diary" for 1874
Description
Small diary printed by E. Moses and Son in which Burton has written his engagements for the year of 1874. Though not consistently used throughout the year, entries do span the entirety of the diary and include social meetings such as "Miss North - Tea, 8" (21 January) and events such as "Wagner Concert. St. James's Hall" (23 January) and "R[oyal] Acad[emy] Soirée - 9" (2 July) Also included are engagements related to Burton's new directorship of the National Gallery (UK) such as "Board [Meeting] National Gallery - 3, Soc[iety] [of] Antiquarians" (21 May), "Arundel Society" (19 March), and "Sothebys 7.45" (25 June). Burton also notes engagements with other artists such as his friend "E[dward] B[urne] Jones - 5" (24 December). Printed general information beginning the "almanack" portion includes information on holidays and important dates as well as postal and telegraph rates, names and stations of politicians, and advertisements.
