Description
Handwritten letter in which Orpen speaks of the problems he faces completing a portrait of a young girl in Hudderfield, writing that 'if this little child was only decent I think I would be painting a very good picture, but it is one that will take a long time to finish - I think I will have to get a photograph of the child in the pose - the miserable little thing is all nerves...' Elsewhere he mentions returning to London from Dublin, and a trip for Grace to the opera. Letter includes three pen sketches - one showing Orpen at work at his easel as a child escapes through a window; one of an opera stage; and one of Orpen standing on a hilltop overlooking Huddersfield.
