Illustrated letter from William Orpen to Grace Knewstub concerning his time in Cany, writing of his interior paintings, and giving news of 'John'
Description
Handwritten letter in which Orpen writes of the need to paint interior scenes owing to the recent bad weather, 'we have got beautiful rooms - well worth painting so it is not so bad.' He also writes that 'I had a long letter from [Augustus] John this morning - he is off today with Michel Salamen bound for the South of France ... John has fallen in love once more and yet I hope this will not be the last.' Letter includes two pen sketches, one showing Orpen seated at a table writing his letter, overlooked by two burly men, and the second shows Orpen leaving his hotel with his painting paraphernalia. [Hotel appears to be the Hotel Du Commerce, noted in similar letters of the period]
