Letters to Christine 'Kit' Orpen Casey / Mrs Barrie Nicoll
Description
This series contains three main files of correspondence: Christine Orpen Casey's correspondence with James White (Director, National Gallery of Ireland) concerning her gift of letters to the Gallery in 1977-78, pertaining to her father's portraits in the permanent collection; Orpen Casey's correspondence relating to the publication of a commemorative stamp in 1978 by An Post, to mark the centenary of William Orpen's birth; and Orpen Casey's correspondence with Dr Mary Lago concerning the publication of the latter's book on the correspondence between Max Beerbohm and William Rothenstein. These letters of correspondence use Christine Orpen Casey's subsequent married name, Mrs. Barrie Nicoll. The series concludes with a number of standalone letters, from notable correspondents including John Gielgud, Jeanette Powell, Michael Salaman, John Rothenstein, and William Monk Gibbon as they discuss their interest in the work of William Orpen, and his historical archive.
