Description
Handwritten letter addressed from 109 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea SW10, London, in which Philip Wilson Steer sends his sympathies on hearing of Orpen's death. He writes that 'it seems only the other day that I remember him as a brilliant student at the Slade School and since then I have watched with interest his development and distinguished career not only as a portrait painter but also in another mood where satire and whimsicality play their part. He also had a very good heart as numbers of his acts of kindness have come to my knowledge.' [Philip Wilson Steer was a painting tutor at the Slade School of Art for many years]
