Description
Scrapbook contains news cuttings, photographs, and letters detailing William Orpen's life and career. Cuttings include a large number of printed reproductions of Orpen paintings. Six photographs comprise of Orpen standing with his portrait of John McCormack; standing with his portrait of Viscount Grey of Fallodon (x2); standing with the painting 'The Black Cap'; standing in military uniform holding a palette in a formal room; and sitting for a studio portrait photograph. Scrapbook also includes a formal Christmas greeting card from Harry Gordon Selfridge, with Orpen's portrait of Selfridge reproduced on the card (1927-1928); a letter from 10 Downing Street, London, concerning a proposed portrait of the Prime Minister [Stanley Baldwin] (1 August 1928); a cigarette card issued by John Player & Sons, showing a caricature of William Orpen [1926]; a caricature of Orpen from Punch Magazine (December 1925); and a death notice on the passing of Orpen's father, Arthur Herbert Orpen in 1926.
