William Orpen Sketchbooks
Description
Four sketchbooks thought to have been created by William Orpen during his time as a student at the Metropolitan School of Art Dublin (1891-1897). The Emerald Drawing Book brand of sketchbook is used in three instances, with an unbranded sketchbook also in evidence. Sketches depict figure studies, anatomical studies, still life scenes, paintings, objects, furniture, and sculpture. Detailed handwritten notes and annotations appear alongside many examples, giving information on what is being represented, its location, the materials used, and other facts of historical interest. Pen and pencil in evidence throughout. The smaller of the sketchbooks is concerned primarily with human figure studies.
