William Orpen Scrapbooks
Description
Four scrapbook albums containing press cuttings, letters, photographs, and ephemera relating to William Orpen's public career, and on occasion reporting on his private family life with news of engagements, marriages, deaths, and other notable events. Cuttings include a large number of printed reproductions of Orpen's paintings. A large number of publications are represented, comprising both newspapers and magazines. Orpen's period as a war artist is well represented by news articles on his experience, alongside reviews of his memoir 'An Onlooker in France, 1917-1919', and articles on the reception of his war paintings, particularly the work known as 'To the Unknown British Soldier in France', first exhibited in 1923. Photographs depict Orpen at work in his studio on significant portraits, including those of the tenor Sir John McCormack, and the actress Gladys Cooper. Other photographs include Eugene Grossrieter (“Chester”), who featured in Orpen's painting, Le Chef de l'Hôtel Chatham, Paris. Letters of correspondence comprise examples from members of the public and Orpen's peers, commenting on various paintings Orpen has exhibited, alongside letters from his London publishers Williams & Norgate Ltd, the War Office, and Buckingham Palace, amongst others.
