Description
This series documents Sir Denis Mahon's activities as a collector of fine art. Commencing in 1934, with the purchase of Guercino's 'Jacob Blessing the Sons of Joseph', Sir Denis Mahon would go on to build one of the most prominent and valuable private collections of baroque art in Europe. Files in this series encompass administration records for his private collection including exhibition and loan requests; purchase and sale records for individual works; as well as records for minor artworks owned by the Mahon and Browne families such as family portraits, drawings, and engravings. Specific files exist for works by the following artists: Paul Brill, Pompeo Batoni, Sebastien Bourdon, Annibale Carracci, Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Domenichino, Gaspard Dughet, Guercino, Johann Liss, Nicolas Poussin, and Guido Reni. Record types in this series include correspondence; receipts, photographs, and handwritten and typescript provenance and research notes.
