James Nadal Gift, 2009
Collection contains manuscript letters and an envelope, predominantly from Aloysius O’Kelly to his nephew and financial advisor James Herbert of 588 South 16th Street, Flushing, Long Island, New York. These letters document time spent by O’Kelly in Cashel, County Tipperary and Dublin in 1926, Concarneau (France) in 1927, and New York from 1928 onwards, during which time he was painting and trying to find buyers for his work. Later material relates primarily to his New York accommodation, financial advice, and his niece Bernadette O’Kelly. The collection also includes one letter from Gertrude Lawlor and one letter from Bernadette O’Kelly, both of 17 Brewster Gardens, London, England to James Herbert, and one letter from James Herbert to Aloysius O’Kelly.
