Powell Collection, 2019
Description
This collection contains material relating to Sir Frederic William Burton's career as an artist as well as his directorship of the National Gallery (London, UK). It includes an album of photographs, drawings, and sketches by Burton (possibly compiled after Burton's death by his relative Dorothy Alley (née Burton)) as well as four additional notebooks containing sketches, notes on art, and a trip diary. In addition, the collection contains two recent copies of photographs taken of Burton in the 1880s, his visiting card, and correspondence relating to Burton's life and career from many prominent artists, writers, and politicians of his time. Also included is correspondence relating to the life and career of the solicitor Henry Bindon Burton, a nephew of Sir Frederic William Burton who acted as executor to Sir Frederic's estate, as well as a miscellany of items relating to other Burton family members; notably a family tree, a 1923 bicycle permit issued to Dorothy Alley in County Cork by the Irish National Army, and a postcard depicting Clifden, the Burton ancestral home in County Clare.
