Description
A small diary (mostly unused) containing handwritten details of the "traveling expenses of the Director of the National Gallery (Burton) on an official tour in autumn 1883" to Italy, comprising three categories of expenses: travelling, incidental, and allowance. Burton's journey included stops at Paris, Turin, Milan, Bergamo, Vincenza, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome, and Genoa. Expenses include mostly Railway, luggage, porterage, carriage, and omnibus fares as well as fees to see paintings and gondola trips in Venice. Final page of content includes an abstract total of expenses citing "C[harles] L. Eastlake, accounting officer."
