Description
A small diary (mostly unused) containing handwritten details of the "official list of expenses incurred by the Director of the National Gallery (Burton) on a journey to Italy from the 7 March to the 4 April 1875, comprising three categories of expenses: traveling, incidental and allowance." Burton's journey included stops to view paintings at Paris, Turin, Milan, Bergamo, Brescia, Verona, Venice, Treviso, Padua, and Vincenza. Expenses include mostly cab, hotel, luggage, and first-class railway fares, as well as a "gondola to see pictures" in Venice and fees to see paintings. Notebook was purchased from a stationer in Venice.
