Travel Diaries
Description
This series contains five travel diaries kept by Sir Frederic William Burton relating to his travels and four tours of Italy; two trips possibly taken in 1864 and three during his directorship of the National Gallery (UK) in 1875, 1880, and 1883. The diaries kept from the 1864 and 1880 voyages provide a detailed narrative of Burton's travels, relating his experiences and describing artwork that he saw. The diaries from 1875 and 1883 mainly represent expense reports for the costs incurred by his journeys for the National Gallery, but nonetheless provide detailed accounts of Burton's activities and movements throughout the trips.
