| Description |
Incomplete draft of the tribute written by William Crampton Gore after the death his friend, Irish artist Dermod O’Brien (1865-1945).These are actually the first two pages of the incomplete tribute, as the end of page 2 stops in the middle of a sentence. In these pages, Crampton Gore delves into his friendship with O’Brien (d. 3 October 1945), which began at the turn of the century when he married a relative and friend of Gore’s, and strengthened with time and several long visits to Gore’s homes – a summer in Donegal in 1915, two stays in Montreuil-sur-Mer in 1926 and 1928. Gore speaks highly of O’Brien’s character and of his time as president of the Royal Hibernian Academy elected in 1910). This text handwritten in ink appears to be a draft, as some words were crossed out and changed. It is accompanied by two photocopies, one of them of a version annotated by Gore's daughter Elizabeth, giving a few lines of context about the document. |
