William Crampton Gore Collection

Records of Irish artist William Crampton Gore (1871-1946). A medical doctor and ship surgeon during World War I, he was a student of Henry Tonks at the Slade School of Art where he befriended artists such as William Orpen. He lived in Paris, then in Montreuil-sur-Mer from 1912 to 1933, where his daughter Elizabeth was born in 1926, before settling in Colchester until his death. He was a painter (particularly of landscapes and domestic interiors) and also wrote musical settings for existing poems. These records touch on all aspects of his personal and professional life. They were compiled and donated by his daughter Elizabeth Crampton Gore (m. Burton then m. Parry Crooke). The collection also includes a 19th century sketchbook, a family heirloom filled with contributions from various women of the Crampton family.
