Description
Handwritten notes containing extracts from auction catalogues dated 1682-1850, featuring works by Il Guercino (1591-1666). These have been sourced in the British Museum, the National Gallery London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Includes extracts from Algernon Graves' (1845-1922) "Art Sales from Early in the Eighteenth Century to Early in the Twentieth Century" (1918, UK) and "Art Sales Vol II", (1888, UK) by George Redford (active 1888) detailing auction sales of Guercino’s works. Attached to one page is a note by Sir Denis Mahon of an article on William Young Ottley (1771-1836) by John Gere (1921-1995) (British Museum Quarterly XVIII, no.2, June 1953); also inserted are three typewritten pages headed: “Notes concerning the Collection of Arthur Champernowne from a typescript communicated in November 1954 by Miss Mary Spender, a relation.” [Arthur Champernowne (1767-1819) a well-known art collector, lived at Dartington Hall, Devon.] Also includes a photocopy of an annotated Christies’ sale catalogue 'Capital Italian Pictures' April 17, 1812; and a photocopy of an extract from Christies’ catalogue 'Important Pictures by Old Masters' 26 November 1971, lot 15, Saint John.
