Description
Photographs of paintings by Caravaggio with some annotations on the verso, and a letter from Emile E. Wolf regarding the photographs. Many of the prints also contain stamps on the verso belonging to photographers and studios such as "Vasari," "Michael Fairclough, Thirsk," "WF Miller & Co, Hartford Connecticut," "Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale, Roma," "Mario Perotti, Milano" and "Sun, Photographic Bureau, Watford." The paintings were found in various collections and institutions such as the Museo Civico, Udine, the Galleria Borghese, Rome, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Galleria Doria, Rome, the Galleria Corsini, Frienze, the Ambrosiana, Milan, the Collection of Anthony Renoir and the Parish Church in Thirsk. One of the paintings was also found in Christie's Lord Harcourt Sale , 1948. The paintings by Caravaggio include; "Young Sick Bacchus," "Boy with a Basket of Fruit," "Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy," "Boy Bitten by a Lizard," "Penitent Magdalene," "Musicians," "Portrait of Maffeo Barberini," "Lute Player," "Bacchus," "Rest on the Flight into Egypt," "Medusa" and "Incredulity of St Thomas."
