Description
Photographs paintings mainly by the artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, also represented are paintings by Orazio Gentileschi. There are various annotations on the verso of these photographs, as well as various photographers' stamps belonging to studios such as Alinari and the Ministerio della Pubblica Istruzione Gabinetto Fotografico Nazionale, Rome. The artwork found in this file comes from collections of various instituions such as the Vatican Gallery, a church in Northern England and the Chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi, Rome. Paintings include, by Caravaggio; "St Matthew and the Angel," "Sacrifice of Isaac," "John the Baptist," "Calling of St Matthew," "Martyrdom of St Matthew," "Narcissus," "Amor Victorious," "Supper at Emmaus," "Incredulity of St Thomas," "The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew," "Conversion of St Paul," "Conversion of St Paul on the road to Damascus," "Crucifixion of St Peter," "The Taking of Chirst," "Inspiration of St Matthew," "Entombment" and "St Jerome Writing." Also includes "Madonna and Child" and "Christ Carrying the Cross," both by Orazio Gentileschi. There is also a rough handwritten note written by Sir Denis Mahon relating to the chronology of paintings represented in this folder.
