Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 13th December 1894 in which the following was discussed: Reverend Mahaffy appointed to board. Report noting the successful procurement of a pension for retired Registrar Mr Kennedy. An extract from the will of Lady Fitzgerald of 29 Merrion Square offering 'any six pictures' to the Gallery (with some conditions) [NGI 444, 445, 446, 447, 448]. Mr Strickland receives his certificate of qualification from the Civil Service Commission. The Director submits five paintings bequeathed to the Gallery by Miss Thomson of 16 Fitzwilliam Place. The Director exhibited a picture, "The Betrayal of Christ" by Gerard van Honthorst ["The Arrest of Christ" by Matthias Stom [NGI 425]], offered by a Mr George Donaldson of New Bond Street, London in memorial of his mother, a Dublin woman. It was accepted. It was agreed to accept seven pictures (listed) from Colonel Burges of Co. Tyrone. The Director exhibited three pictures purchased by him; "Study of a Highland Forester" by Charles Grey [NGI 426] (£5). "Thomas Street, Dublin" watercolour by Malton [NGI 2186] (£17.10.0), a pair of portraits in pencil by Thomas Gainsborough (£5.5.0). Discussion on fair wages for Gallery staff. The Director submitted an estimate of £2502 for the year 1895/6.
