Minutes of board meeting held on 5th Ocotber 1962 in which the following was discussed: two firms were reported to be tendering for alarms system. The aim is to have it place by 1963. Discussion on commencement of the new Gallery extension in the 'near future', some discussion on potential lighting arrangements. Brief discussion of byelaw amendments. Mr de Vere White appointed judge of Taylor Art Competition. A letter from Mr Reamon was read regarding a Chester Beatty van Gogh 'recognised as of national importance'. Hew reported that he could see no possibilty of concessions being made on death duties by the English Revenue authorities. Ethna Waldron confirmed as new Assistant. Mr Patrick Ryan or Padraig O'Rian reported to have taken up his duties as Registrar. The Director (Thomas McGreevy) expressed his desire to be relieved of the 'strain and reponsability' of the role. There followed a discussion (the Director left the room), it was noted that at 55 he was 'not pensionable'. The difficulty in finding a 'first-class man' was noted. It suggested that Mr MacGreevy could continue as a consultant. On his return Mr MacGreevy stated he would not like to feel bound for another year. The picture "Pippa Passes" by J B Yeats {NGI 3253] was accepted. Agreement reached to lend pictures to government departments. It was agreed to lend "View in Suffolk and Landscape with Cattle" by Gainsborough [NGI 191 and NGI 796] to Nottingham University. Brief mention of Shaw and Lane Fund. It was agreed to extend the loan period of some loans. It was agreed to permit Donegal Carpets to reproduce Piazzetta. Ernest Rowe-Dutton resigns from the board due to ill-health. Discussion of Milltown Furniture and the possibility of placing it in other institutions.
