Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 6th April 1962 in which the following was discussed: it was reported that in the opinion of the Furniture Branch of the OPW some of the Milltown Furniture would 'have to be destroyed due to their worm eaten condition'. It was reported that alarm bells were being installed. It was agreed to purchase "The Holy Family" by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo [NGI 1719] from Agnew and Sons for £40,000. It was also agreed to purchase "Mary Magdelene" by Murillo [The Penitent Magdalene NGI 1720] for £9000 - both from the Shaw Fund. It was agreed to purchase "Abraham and the Three Angels" by Juan Fernández de Navarrete [NGI 1721] for £14,000. The purchase of three other pictures was discussed but no decisions made. The Director was informed that he might 'find out discretely' what the attitude of the English Revenue Commissioners would be if pictures from the collection of Chester Beatty were sold to Irish National Gallery. The loan of six pictures was agreed. Discussion of a proposal to allow the board to use 'a portion of funds under their control towards the erection, extension, acquisition of buildings' on the condition that this does not override express terms of any bequests. Some discussion of Shaw and Lane Funds. It was agreed to allow Fratelli Fabri to take photographs of the Gallery for an encyclopedia of art.
