Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 11th April 1969 in which the following was discussed: Mr E.A. Maguire and Mr T. De Vere White were reappointed Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively. Sir Alec Martin and Mr Gerald Y. Goldberg were reappointed to the board. A letter was received from Dr Ian Wellington informing the board that he had come across a self-portrait by Robert Lucius West, stolen from the Gallery 8 years previously [NGI 418]. Guided tours were discussed. The Royal Hibernian Academy requested the use of the Gallery for an exhibition. A letter was received from the secretary of the Department of Finance. The Rijksmuseum requested the loan of a Rembrandt, which was granted. The board accepted the following gifts; "A Flower Girl" by Jack B. Yeats, a plaster model for a monument of Thomas Moore by John Hogan [NGI 8061], drawing of Maire Ni Scolai by Sean O'Sullivan [NGI 6995] and a drawing of E.A. Maguire, also by O'Sullivan [NGI 6994]. The purchase of the following works was approved; "John Allen in Bridgewater" by Thomas Frye [NGI 1904], "The Last Dawn but One" by Jack B. Yeats [NGI 1906], portrait of a man by Nathaniel Hone, portrait of Master Joseph Burke by Samuel de Wilde [NGI 6997] and "Views of Dublin by Pool and Cash." The visit of Italian Restorers was discussed. Changes to the byelaws were approved in principle. The Director was authorised to approach the Minister to suggest improving the salary and status of the position of Assistant and Assistant restorer in the Gallery.
