Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 1st April 1959 in which the following was discussed: it was noted the sum of £3000 was provided for the purchase and repair of pictures (£2000 less than asked for). Discussion on pensions for staff. Discussion of the provision of the services of a cleaner for the pictures. Five offers of pictures for purchase deferred until an extraordinary meeting for the purposes of the discussion. It was decided to lend the picture "Summer and Autumn" by Bernardo Strozzi ["Allegory of Spring and Summer" NGI 856] to an exhibition of Venetian paintings in Venice. It was agreed to lend "Dawn, Connemara" by Paul Henry to the RHA [NGI 1234]. A pen and ink caricature of W B Yeats by Max Beerbohm [NGI 3773] was accepted as a gift from The Friends of the Irish National Collection. Two portraits, one of Walter Armstrong [NGI 1389] and one of Lady Armstrong [NGI 1388] by Walter Osborne were accepted from E M Dea. It was noted that £69,000 had been received from the Shaw bequest and that £41,000 had been deducted in income tax. It was decided to ask the Attorney General for his considered opinion on using the Shaw fund for building a Gallery extension.
