Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 2nd April in which the following was discussed: the Hon. James A. Murnaghan expressed his desire to step down as Chairman but remain on the board. This was granted, with Senator McGuire being appointed as Chairman, and Mr Terence De Vere White being appointed as Vice-Chairman. The Director had approached the Department of Education regarding the appointment of a temporary cataloguer and an assistant restorer. It was decided that more efforts should be made in overcoming the difficulties which prevented the Gallery from having an entrance on Kildare Street. The board received three loan requests which were all granted. Two self-portraits by Sean O'Sullivan were offered for purchase, one a drawing and one in oils, both of which were approved for purchase [NGI 1770]. 8 small paintings by William Sadler were also approved for purchase [NGI 1771-1778]. The purchase of "Grief" by Jack B. Yeats was approved [NGI 1769]. The Minister for Education expressed a desire to hold a reception for the Museum's Association in the Gallery, which the board agreed to. The Director proposed to form a society of members of the Gallery, who would pay a membership fee to go towards the purchase of paintings. This was agreed upon by the board. The board approved the amended opening hours of the Gallery. The board commented on the state of the Shaw Fund and the Lane Fund.
