Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 4th October 1963 in which the following was discussed: it was agreed that a sub-committee should meet to prepare a completed up-to-date list of the byelaws. A picture by Moroni was lent to an exhibition of Moroni's works to be held in Italy. A request was received from the Shakespeare Exhibition Office for the loan of a portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh, which was granted. Pictures by Humbert Craig and Alexander Williams were gifted to the Gallery, after being promised a number of years ago [NGI 1757-1758]. A drawing of Ernie O'Malley by Sean O'Sullivan was presented and accpeted by the board [NGI 3565]. Three pictures by James Barry, George Barrett and William Mulready were gifted to the Gallery [NGI 1759, 1760 and 3566]. "Madonna and Child" by AE (George William Russell) was also accepted [NGI 1761], along with a portrait of Robert Shaw by Gilbert Stuart, which was the original version of the Robert Shaw portrait already in the Gallery. The board agreed to accept the gift. The purchase of "Death in the Snow" by William Orpen was approved [NGI 1762], along with a drawing of Sir Chester Beatty by Sean O'Sullivan [NGI 3567]. A drawing of James Stephens was refused for purchase, along with "Lion and the Serpent" by Delacroix and "Moses and the Tables of the Law" by Philippe de Champaigne, which were all declined. A list of applicants for the post of Director was received, but it was felt that the advertisment should have been circulated more widely, and it was resolved to take steps to ensure this. The credit of the Shaw and Lane Funds was noted. The board decided not to purchase a library of Fine Art reproductions offered to them by Robert Kerr Ritchie, London.
