Minutes of a board meeting held on 7th June 1963 in which the following was discussed: a letter was received from the Chief State Solicitor regarding the Guardi pictures, and further discussion was held as to whether or not the board should purchase the 8 Guardi pictures, as it would take an incredible sum of funds. More information was recieved from the Department of Education in connection with the particulars of the post of Director. Three pictures that were on loan in Belfast were inspected as they had been damaged, and it was proposed that all pictures be glazed when on loan for exhibition. A letter was received from the Department of Education regarding an increase in pay for the Director's assistant, Miss Waldrow, which the Department had agreed to proceed with, and a letter was also received in connection with attendant staff. A portrait of Archbishop Murray was approved for purchase [NGI 1756]. The board agreed to lend two pictures for an exhibition in Belfast of Irish Houses and Landscapes. The Director made a detailed report on the Shaw Fund, and commented on the credit of the Lane Fund. A proposed extension of the Gallery was discussed, costing £315,000, and a new water supply system for the entire Gallery, which was estimated to cost and additional £38,000. They estimated the building work to last three years once the contract was placed, and individual members were urged to appeal to the Office of Public Works.
