Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 5th April 1963 in which the following was discussed: the Hon. James A. Murnaghan was elected as Chairman of the board for the forthcoming year, while Senator Maguire was declared Vice-Chairman. Mr De Vere White was appointed judge of the National Art Competition. The draft of the amended byelaws was accepted and to be formally submitted at the June meeting of the board. The Director submitted his date of resignation as 30th September 1963, but agreed to carry on as a consultant to the Gallery from 14th October 1963. The 32 drawings by Sean O'Sullivan offered for purchase at a previous meeting were listed and approved for purchase [NGI 3533-3564]. Two oil pictures, "Portrait of a Lady" by Largilliere, later attributed to Alexis Simon-Belle, and "Portrait of Lord Sunderlin" by Reynolds, offered for purchase in a previous meeting, were viewed and approved [NGI 1735 and 1734]. The purchase of "Ratification of Irish Treaty, House of Lords, London" by John Lavery was approved [NGI 1736]. "The Double Jockey Act" by Jack B. Yeats, was also approved for purchase [NGI 1737]. A bronze bust of Robert Lloyd was approved for purchase [NGI 8035]. A watercolour of Howth was declined for purchase. There was discussion around a list of pieces offered for sale but no action was taken at present. A list of bronze bust portraits presented to the Gallery were all accepted. The Friends of the National Collections expressed interest in commissioning a picture for the Gallery, which the board reacted favourably to. A request was received from the President of the Royal Academy of Arts, London, for the loan of two Goya Pictures, which was granted. The Registrar reported on the credit of the Shaw Fund and the Lane Fund.
