Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 1st February 1963 in which the following was discussed: information was given regarding the extension of the Gallery premises. Due to Dr MacGreevy's ill healh, it was resolved to give him a leave of absence as Director. The statue of George Bernard Shaw was also discussed. H. Barrington Jellet was elected President of the Royal Dublin Society, therefore becoming a member of the board. A letter was received from the Irish Times seeking permission to take photographs in the Gallery, but the board resolved that they should only be permitted to take photographs of the premises of the Gallery. A portait of Thomas Brennan was offered as a gift to the Gallery and accepted by the board [NGI 1731]. The estimates for 1963-64 were submitted and approved by the board. The Director's annual report for 1962 was read. Twenty Mahon pictures had been chosen to be lent to Belfast for their annual exhibition. A collection of 32 drawings by Sean O'Sullivan were offered for purchase by the Dawson Galleries. Two pictures, by Largilliere and Reynolds were offered for purchase but had not yet reached the board for inspection. Byelaws were to be brought up to date and amended. The board noted the credit of the Shaw Fund. More information was received about the running and organisation of the George Bernard Shaw Trust Fund. The board noted the credit of the Lane Fund, and its investments. Mrs Mary Byrne bequeathed a portrait of Billy Byrne of Ballymanus, which was accepted [NGI 1730]. Draft copies of the proposed National Gallery of Ireland Bill, 1963, were discussed.
