Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 1st October 1958 in which the following was discussed: it was agreed to lend a painting of Dr Benjamin Hoadly by William Hogarth [NGI 398] to the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. The two paintings "The Enthronement of Saint Rumbold as Bishop" by Colijn de Coter [Master of the Youth of Saint Rumbold, Netherlandish, fl. c.1490 - NGI 1380] and "The Departure of St Romold" by The Master of the Magdalen Legend ["Saint Rumbold Taking Leave of his Parents", Master of the Youth of Saint Rumbold NGI 1381] were reported as purchased for £6515 from the Chatsworth Sale. "A Squire in a Tavern" by Mulready [NGI 1382] as presented by Monsignor Ryan was submitted for inspection. A Turner was offered for sale by Mr Patrick Leavy at a price of £1500 which was considered excessive by the board. It was agreed that the policy in regard to acquisitions should be 'positively active in filling gaps rather than acquiring paintings by haphazard offers'. Discussion on the pension arrangements of staff. The board glad to hear the Director was recovering well from his illness.
