Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 6th December 1951 in which the following was discussed: a gift was received from Mrs Ruth Heaven, of photographs of pictures which had belonged to her brother, Sir Hugh Lane, and was accepted by the board. The estimate for 1952-1953 was submitted and approved. The Director submitted five pictures for purchase, two of which were declined. The purchase of "Landscape Idyll" by Gainsborough was declined. "The Penitent Magdalen" by Titian was submitted for purchase at £25,000, and the board agreed that it should aim to raise sufficient funds for this purchase. The board was notified of a collection of portraits of family members of Sir Hugh Lane soon to go for auction at Christie's, but the board decided to take no action. A gift of 24 enamel miniatures from Mr A. Chester Beatty was accepted with thanks. "The Arrest of Charlotte Conday" was accepted with thanks [NGI 1226]. The Director reported on the credit of the Lane Fund.
