Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 14th February 1951 in which the following was discussed: the closing of the Gallery on a Saturday afternoon. The Minister for Finance had only sanctioned an estimate of £8510 for the Gallery for 1951-1952. The Rt. Hon. James MacMahon had concluded his term as President of the Royal Dublin society, and therefore his term on the board. He would be replaced by Mr Arthur T. McMorrough Kavanagh. It was proposed to defer consideration of the National Register of Irish Historical Portraits at present. The Director had correspondence with the Office of Public Works and the Department of Education regarding the installation of an electric lift in the Gallery, which the board sanctioned. The Cultural Committee of the Department of External Affairs sent a request for the loan of 26 pictures by Irish artists, which was granted. The Friends of the National Collections of Ireland submitted a request for the use of a room in the Gallery for their annual meeting, however this was declined due to byelaw 35. The Director submitted his annual report for 1950 which was approved. Mr John Keating and Mr Lucius O'Callaghan were appointed auditors of the Lane Fund. The purchase of a portrait of Lady Elizabeth Fitzgerald was approved. A picture "Musical Interlude" was declined for purchase, as well as a picture of the Cosgreve family. The purchase of a miniature by George Chinnery was also declined. The purchase of a painting of Charles I and his children interviewing Cromwell by Daniel Maclise was accepted [NGI 1206]. A picture "Christ in the house of Martha and Mary" by Eustache Le Sueur was accepted. Two portraits, one of Justin McCarthy and the other of Charlotte McCarthy were offered to the Gallery and accepted [NGI 1210-1211]. The loan of a portrait of Sean Kavanagh by Sean O'Sullivan was accepted. The amendments of byelaws 5 and 17 were approved. The Director received a letter from Mr. Chester Beatty regarding frescoes he wished to donate to the Gallery, which the board stated they would greatly accept. The Director commented on the credit of the Lane Fund.
