Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 5th April 1950 in which the following was discussed: the question of a National Register of Historical Portraits, as referred to previously in 1945, and the role of the National Portrait Gallery in this endeavour. It was suggested that a university graduate in history should be appointed to prepare the register. It was proposed to place the statue of Mr Bernard Shaw, originally not to be exhibited until after his death, in front of the Gallery at Leinster Lawn, and a sub-committee was appointed to designate a proper site. The Corcoran Gallery of Art requested a loan of a picture from the Gallery, which was granted. The Tate Gallery in London also requested the loan of a drawing which was granted. The purchase of "Portrait of the Artist's Wife" by Robert Fagan was declined. The purchase of a drawing of Robert Lynd was accepted [NGI 3868]. The Registar submitted a report on the investments of the Lane Fund. The audited account of the Lane Fund had been submitted and approved. The gift of "Lawrence of Arabia" by Herbert Gurschner was accepted [NGI 1184]. The Registrar commented on the credit of the Lane Fund.
