Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 6th April 1955 in which the following was discussed: the death of Evie Hone provoked an expression of sympathy to her relatives. The figure of £10,700 approved by the Minister of Finance. It was agreed to appoint the present Director (Thomas MacGreevy) on a permanent basis. It was agreed to loan "Saints Cosmas and Damian and their Brothers Surviving the Stake" by Fra Angelico [NGI 242] to a quincentenary of the artists work in the Vatican and items to the Birmingham City Museum and to the Iveagh Trust. It was agreed to purchase a portrait of Richard Lalor Sheil (1791-1851), Author and Politician 'attributed' to Haverty [NGI 1304] for £60. Henry Mangan submitted a memorandum to the board about a Register of National Portraits. Some furniture donated by Chester Beatty was accepted (12 chairs and 2 show-cases). It was agreed to purchase two Venetian Primitives from Monsignor Shine for £300 each [NGI 1278].
