Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 4th June 1941 in which the following was discussed: Professor William Magennis was appointed to the board [until 1946]. Mr Dermod O'Brien was appointed judge for the Taylor Art Competition. More information was heard regarding the Lane Fund investment. "Moonlight Scene" by van der Meer was declined for purchase. The purchase of a crayon drawing of the late Sir Hamilton Harty was approved [NGI 2979]. The purchase of a picture by Darius Joseph Macegan "The National Gallery" was declined for purchase. A request was received from the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland for the use of a room in the Gallery for an exhibition, however the board resolved that they were unable to fulfill this request. A discussion was held regarding the Seal of the Gallery being affixed to documents. A portrait of the late F.R. Higgins was declined for purchase. The Director drew the board's attention to two pictures that had been set aside for safe-keeping in the Bank of Ireland had been in storage cases for almost a year, and the board was concerned about deterioration of the pieces. They resolved to open the cases periodically to allow the pictures access to light and air. The Director reported on the state of the Lane Fund.
