Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 5th June 1940 in which the following was discussed: the Minister for Education reappointed Justice Murnaghan to the board. The Director received a letter from the Department of Education stating that any pictures selected for safe-keeping in the event of an emergency should be packaged now. The board drafted a notice to be hung in the Gallery regarding the removal of some pictures. The Director had received that annual report and balance sheet for the Royal Automobile Club Buildings Co. Ltd. in which the board had 20 shares. Mr Oliver Sheppard was reappointed as judge for the Taylor Art Scholarship for 1941. The purchase of "Portrait of Francis Hutchinson and his daughter, Ann" by Jan Carel Vierpeyl was approved [NGI 1025]. The purchase of a watercolour by Michael Angelo Hayes was declined. The Queen's University Joint Committee for Adult Education requested the loan of eight watercolours, which was granted under certain conditions. The board was offered the loan of a picture attributed to Rubens from Mr Patrick O'Connor, but stated they could not accept it at this time. Miss Purser gifted a portrait of George Russell which she had done herself, which was accepted [NGI 1024]. The Director commented on the credit of the Lane Fund.
