Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 3rd April 1940 in which the following was discussed: a letter was received from the Department of Finance in regards to the estimate for the Gallery for the following year. A letter was also received from the Department of External Affairs stating that the Italian Government had gifted Ireland with a painting by Giorgio de Chirico, which the Taoiseach asked the Gallery to exhibit while its final destination was decided. A picture "Crucifixion and Christ appearing to Saint Mary Magdalene" by Giovanni Baronzio, later attributed to Francesco da Rimini, was approved for purchase from Captain Langton Douglas [NGI 1022]. A "Portrait of Nathaniel Kane" was also approved for purchase [NGI 1058]. The board also approved the purchase of "Interior with Figures" from the Dutch School [possibly NGI 1949]. A bequest from the late Mrs Charlotte Despard was not accepted. The board received a request for the loan of some pictures bequested to the Gallery by Sir Hugh Lane in aid of an exhibition in aid of Finland, however this request was not granted. A gift from Miss E.M. Hogg of a charcoal drawing of Miss Susan Mitchell by George Russell was accepted [NGI 2977]. Mr T. Spicer Simpson offer two medallions for purchase which were accepted, one of Oliver St John Gogarty, [NGI 8222] and one of St John G. Ewing. The Director reported on the state of the Lane Fund.
