Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 6th December 1939 in which the following was discussed: the Director purchased an Early Italian painting on copper, discussed at a previous meeting. He also submitted the estimate for 1940-41 which was approved by the board. The British Council requested an extension on the loan of "The Dead Ptarmigan" by Orpen, which was granted. The installation of electric lighting in the Gallery was delayed by the Office of Public Works. The purchase of "The Massacre of the Innocents" by G.M. Crespi was authorised [NGI 1020]. Works offered by Mrs Caldwell were declined for purchase. The board agreed to accept a loan of two portraits from the Dublin Corporation, one of King Charles II and one of King George IV. The Director was instructed to purchase "St John the Baptist Day - Return from the Polio" after he inspected it. An offer to purchase two watercolours was declined. The closing of the Gallery for cleaning over Christmas was discussed in a letter received by the attendants. A gift of three pencil sketches by Walter Osborne was accepted [NGI 276, NGI 6266-6267]. The Director reported on the status of the Lane Fund.
