Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 7th June 1939 in which the following was discussed: the question of closing the Gallery on Saturday afternoons was raised, the Director explained that it was their period of lowest attendance and therefore no action was taken to reverse it. The byelaws were amended in relation to the responsibilites of the Director in an emergency. Oliver Sheppard was appointed judge of the Taylor Art Scholarship for 1940. The purchase of "St Jerome Translating the Gospels" by Nicolas Frances was approved [NGI 1013]. The purchase of two medallions was declined, as well as the offer of a portrait by S.W. Reynolds. The Director submitted a selection of pictures bequeathed bythe late Miss H.M. Reid, which the board accepted. Two Dutch flower pieces by Franz Peter were offered on loan to the Gallery and accepted. The Director presented two portraits which had recently been reconditioned and the work was approved. The Musee Carnavalet submitted a request for the loan of "The Apotheosis of Jean Jacques Rousseau" by Hubert Robert, which was approved and arrangements instructed to be made. An oil picture from the School of Panini was declined for purchase. The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool requested the loan of a portrait of Dr Kuno Meyer [NGI 859], which was granted under certain conditions. The Director reported on the state of the Lane Fund.
