Description
Minutes of board meeting held on 3rd October 1934 in which the following was discussed: a long account of a deputation from the board to the Minister for Education was read. It included a refutation by the Department of Finance that the Gallery is now getting fewer funds than it did 'under the regime of the British Government'. An objection was also noted that it was innaprorpiate to compare the role of Director with the 'ordinary administrative class of a Civil Service Official'. The deputation from the Gallery argued that the Director was much more skilled than this. The Minister promised to give their 'representations further and careful consideration'. The purchase of "Self-Portrait" by James Barry [NGI 971] approved for purchase (no price). A picture by Roelof de Vries [NGI 972] was purchased for £100 from Mr Louis Wine. The Director submitted three pictures for purchase from van Dieman and Co. Berlin 'Landscape' by Philips Wouverman [NGI 1699] - 12,000 M, "St Christopher" by Lucas Cranach, 12,000 Marks, Portrait of a Young Woman by 'A German Westphalian Master' [NGI 751] - 5000 M. The Director received instructions to spend £1250 on same.
