Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 5th April 1939 in which the following was discussed: more information regarding the possible purchase of an Altar Piece from Mrs Otto Kahn through Captain Langton Douglas, and the board agreed to make an offer subject to their approval of the piece. The Director reported that the building in which artwork would be removed to in the event of an European emergency had not been decided on. The board decided to grant the Director the power to call a meeting with less than five days notice if necessary. Sir John Lavery, Sir Alec Martin and Miss Sarah Purser had all been reappointed to the board. Letter from the Department of Education in regards to opening the Gallery on certain evenings once the installation of the new electric lighting was complete. The board agreed to this and resolved to open the Gallery on three evenings each week, with no adjustment to the regular opening hours. The audited account of the Lane Fund was submitted and approved. The request from the British Council for the loan of "The Dead Ptarmigan" by William Orpen was granted under certain conditions. The board received a purchase offer of two paintings by Walter Osborne, one of Mrs G.W. Yeats which was accepted [NGI 1012] and one of Major Yeats, which was declined. Two pictures offered by Mr. Marshall Shrink were declined. The purchase of a seascape by J.F. Gelis was also declined. The purchase of a picture of Patrick Vincent Duffy, currently on loan to the Gallery, was declined. A gift of an engraving after Turner was declined. The board received a request from an exhibition of Poussin's works to be held in the United States for the loan of the picture "The Marriage of Acis and Galatea" which they declined to grant. The Director submitted two pictures for inspection which had recently been reconditioned. The work on these pictures was approved. A medal gifted by the municipality of Forli was accepted [NGI 8170]. A catalogue was presented to the reference library of the Gallery and gratefully accepted. "A portrait of a young man" by Giovanni Francesco Penni was approved for purchase [NGI 1018]. A portrait of Dr Douglas Hyde was loaned to the President. "The Liffey Swim" by Jack B. Yeats, was loaned to the Irish Pavilion of the New York World's Fair 1939. A gift of a watercolour painting of the Dublin International Exhibition of 1865 was accepted under certain conditions [NGI 3870]. An autograph of Thomas Moore was transferred to the National Library. The Director reported on the credit of the Lane Fund.
