Description
Minutes of a board meeting held on 1st June 1927 in which the following was discussed: a letter was received from the Department of Finance relating to travel expenses of the Director. The Gallery accepted custody of a bust of President Cosgrave [NGI 8147]. The Director reported on Dail proceedings relating to the Gallery. An offer of a pastel sketch of Ms Cochrane by Walter Osborne was declined. Application letters for the position of Director were read and it was decided to appoint Mr Thomas Bodkin as Director of The National Gallery. A letter was received from the Ipswich Corporation Museum in regards to the proposed Gainsborough Memorial Exhibition, however the Director was instructed to point out the unfortunate situation of the board in no longer being able to lend pictures, legislation which they were hoping to get amended. The National Land Bank requested a copy of the corporate seal of the Gallery, which was granted. A portrait by Richard Rothwell was declined for purchase. The board expressed the desire to maintain a connection between the Gallery and former Director, Mr O'Callaghan, and that he should therefore be appointed to the board to replace Mr Bodkin, and a letter expressing this was to be sent to the Department of Education. The board expressed their desire to obtain pictures by the late Ambrose McEvoy. It was suggested that at the next meeting the board would move that the Director require the return of all pictures on loan to the Vice-Regal Lodge or to the Refreshment Room in Leinster House.
